Islamic State Ford BMP-1 Technical

A Ford F-350 'Super Duty' Ute used by the Islamic State, with a 73MM Grom BMP-1 IFV cannon, coaxial 7.62MM PKT and armoured rear cab. It was manufactured in the area around Deir ez-Zor, Eastern Syria circa 2016.

The main gun, a 2A28 Grom cannon firing the same low-velocity rounds as the SPG-9 was removed from a BMP-1 that had been converted into a VBIED (vehicle borne Improvised Explosive Device) in Deir ez-Zor as they were rather common in the area, as with the turret removed the chassis could hold considerable amount of explosives, with several such converted BMP-1 VBIED's being used during checkpoint attacks around the time this technical was upgraded, where the BMP-1 hulls packed with explosives would be sent ahead of the main attack to try and breach holes into the checkpoint walls while also using up any RPG's or ATM's before the infantry-carrying technicals were used in the main assault.

This particular vehicle lacks a Malyutka ATGM mounted on the top rail, but other examples of BMP-1 turrets on technicals have them. This vehicle, or another similar dual-cab ute with a rear superstructure and BMP-1 cannon also showed up in another photograph in combat during an assault near Tabqa, mid-to-late 2016/early 2017, so it seems to have fought with Islamic State for at least a few months, possibly half a year. Apart from the tan colour, rear armoured superstructure and turret which in addition to the main gun also has the coaxial 7.62 PK intact and functional the vehicle looks otherwise unmodified.
